The game, which is known as Fire Emblem: Fūin no Tsurugi in Japan, is the sixth main installment in the series and was released in Japan on March 29, 2002. It is developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo.
The game is based on Roy, the heir of the House of Pherae. A war is brewing on the continent of Elibe and Roy commands an army. Players must build an army, strategically position units on grid based battlefields, handle weapons and classes, and achieve various tactical goals.
The Binding Blade keeps the classic Fire Emblem formula of turn-based strategy mixed with character-driven storytelling. Every unit has its own strengths and weaknesses, and has its own movement, weapons, and stats, so having a huge army isn't the only thing. You have to plan ahead and position well to have successful battles.
Crucially, one of the hallmarks of the game is that it emphasizes anything but trivial tactical decisions. A character that is poorly placed can be easily overwhelmed by enemies, while a well thought out formation can allow a smaller force to take down an army of a much larger size.
The game was also historically notable for introducing Roy, who would later become a well-known figure outside of the Fire Emblem series through his appearances in Super Smash Bros. Nintendo's official Fire Emblem material identifies Roy as the protagonist of The Binding Blade.

The story takes place on the continent of Elibe, approximately twenty years after the events of Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade.
Roy is heir to House Pherae. When Bern launches an aggressive campaign against neighboring territories, Roy is asked to lead Pherae's forces because his father, Eliwood, is unable to command the army himself.
A regional conflict that slowly escalates into something much bigger with powerful kingdoms, ancient weaponry, dragons and history of the relationship between humanity and the dragon race.
Roy eventually teams up with various armies and characters throughout Elibe. As the campaign continues, he learns more of Bern's ruler, King Zephiel, and the forces behind the conflict.
The story gradually shifts from a straightforward war to a plot that delves into the ancient history of the continent and the legendary Binding Blade, a weapon capable of standing against the powerful dragon forces that threaten the world.
Roy’s journey is thus not merely about winning individual battles. As his army expands throughout the campaign, new characters are introduced and battle decisions will affect which units survive and how his army grows.
Gameplay
Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade is a turn-based tactical RPG where you move characters across grid-based maps and carefully plan every attack. Each unit has different strengths, weapons, and abilities, while the classic Sword–Lance–Axe weapon triangle adds another layer of strategy. Permadeath means fallen characters are permanently lost, making every battle important.
Story & Progression: You play as Roy, leading an army across the land of Elibe against the forces of Bern. Throughout the journey, you recruit new characters, visit villages, complete different objectives, and develop your units by gaining experience and changing classes.
