The game follows Andy and other Commanding Officers of Orange Star defending their nation in a series of military conflicts. The campaign teaches the player the basics of strategic warfare, while introducing new characters, new nations, and progressively harder battles.

Advance Wars marries simple controls with deep tactical gameplay. Players move infantry, tanks, artillery, air units, naval forces, and other military forces over various terrains. Capturing cities and bases provides funds for producing additional units and terrain affects movement, defense and combat effectiveness. Each battle requires players to think about unit strengths, fuel, ammunition, positioning, and enemy movements. The Commanding Officers also have some special powers which, if used at the right time, can change the situation on the battlefield.
