Ecco the Dolphin is an old action-adventure game that was originally released in 1992 on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. Developed by Novotrade International and published by Sega, the game casts you as Ecco, a young dolphin who must explore a mysterious underwater world after a powerful force rips him away from his pod. Unlike many action games at the time, Ecco the Dolphin featured exploration, environmental puzzles, underwater navigation, combat, and sonar-based abilities. You are not merely swimming from one stage to the next. To survive, Ecco must conserve his air supply, communicate with other sea creatures, find hidden paths, activate mysterious glyphs, and harness his speed and powerful charge attack. Especially notable in the Genesis version are its atmospheric underwater levels, its unique premise, its challenging level design, and its unique soundtrack. This later became the first in the Ecco the Dolphin series, and was followed by Ecco: The Tides of Time. For anyone wanting to try this classic with emulation, the Genesis version is still an interesting example of how developers used 16-bit hardware to create a large, atmospheric world.

Story

The adventure begins in the peaceful home bay of Ecco. Ecco and his pod are going about their day as usual when a mysterious, immensely powerful disturbance appears. But Ecco is left alone as a great force pulls the dolphins away. Ecco investigates on the whereabouts of his missing pod and finds out that the event was not a natural phenomenon. His search takes him through a variety of underwater settings, from familiar ocean environments to progressively stranger and more dangerous locations. As Ecco explores, he encounters other dolphins and sea creatures who give clues as to what happened. Information about Ecco’s quest is also found in ancient glyphs and mysterious underwater structures. Eventually Ecco's journey takes him far away from his original home. The story includes ancient civilizations, time travel, strange creatures and the alien Vortex. What starts out as a simple rescue mission turns into a much bigger adventure involving the fate of the ocean and Ecco's species. One of the most memorable features of the game is its unusual storyline as it slowly changes from a realistic underwater adventure to a science-fiction journey.

Gameplay

Ecco the Dolphin is primarily an action-adventure game, but it’s gameplay blends in several different mechanics. Rather than focusing on combat alone, the game puts emphasis on exploration, navigation, communication, puzzle-solving and survival. Exploring the Oceans Most of the action is underwater, and Ecco can swim in just about any direction. The environments contain caves, open water, narrow passages, tunnels, plants, sea creatures, air pockets and obstacles. It is important to know Ecco's movement and speed as there are some areas that are not easy to navigate without knowing how to move effectively. Sonar and Echolocation One of Ecco's most important powers is his sonar. The same basic capacity is capable of being used to communicate and to investigate the environment. By pressing the sonar button Ecco can emit a sound that interacts with certain creatures and objects. To activate echolocation, press and hold the button. It will give you information about your surroundings, and help you know what is around you. This mechanic gives Ecco the Dolphin a unique identity compared to traditional platforming and action games. Charge Attack Ecco has no conventional weapon. Instead he attacks by swimming directly at enemies at high speed. The dash or charge can be used both as an offensive move and as a way to quickly move through the environment. Timing is key as charging headfirst into dangerous creatures can cause Ecco to lose health. Air Control Ecco is a dolphin so he can not stay under the water forever. You got to come up every once in a while, or find air sources when under water. Both damage from enemies and running out of air are equally dangerous. This adds extra pressure during exploration and makes route planning important. Glyphs & Puzzles Glyphs are significant objects that can be found across the game. Some provide information, while others are linked to progression and may block off paths. In some areas you’ll need to find the right glyph or interact with something in a certain way before you can proceed. This means that exploring and observing are just as important as fighting. Level Design The Genesis version surprisingly has diverse aquatic environments. The early areas are basic mechanics, while the later areas get more and more complex. Journey locations are Home Bay, Bay of Medusa, The Undercaves, The Vents, The Lagoon, Open Ocean, Ice Zone, Deep Water, The Marble Sea, The Library, Deep City, City of Forever, Jurassic Beach, and Welcome to the Machine. The level design has you remembering locations, looking for openings, managing your air and figuring out how glyphs work quite often. This can make the game considerably more difficult than its peaceful presentation might initially suggest.
