Terrorists have taken over a skyscraper and the President’s daughter, Caroline Powell, hostage. John McClane and Kris Thompsen are sent in to rescue her and kill the attackers. The mission takes the heroes through different parts of the building where they have to fight waves of enemies, powerful bosses and more and more dangerous obstacles. The game takes the over-the-top action of arcade movies, combining hand-to-hand combat with a wide variety of improvised and conventional weapons.

Die Hard Arcade is mostly a 3D arcade beat ’em up. You fight groups of enemies using punches, kicks, throws, jumping attacks, special moves and weapons you find around the environment. The huge combat system is one of the biggest attractions of the game. Sega's promotional material bragged about over 1,000 special moves with players also able to grab over a dozen different weapons and objects. They include guns, swords, furniture, tools, robot parts and other items that can be turned into weapons. The game also has quick-time events where you have to press the right button at the right times during sequences. Completing these events successfully can help you get through the action without having to fight every encounter normally. Multiplayer Mode One of the best things about Die Hard Arcade is the 2 player co-op mode. Up to two players can play together through the stages of the game, combining attacks and taking down enemies as a team. The chaotic arcade combat is even more fun with the co-op system adding special combined attacks. Armament A big part of the gameplay is weapons. Instead of just punches and kicks, players can grab items and weapons from the enemies and the world around them.
