The story begins during the Millennial Fair, where Crono meets a girl named Marle. A demonstration of Lucca's teleportation machine unexpectedly opens a mysterious time portal, sending Marle into the distant past. Determined to rescue her, Crono enters the portal and begins an incredible journey across millions of years of history. As the adventure unfolds, Crono and his companions travel between prehistoric times, the Middle Ages, a ruined future, and advanced civilizations, discovering that a powerful extraterrestrial creature known as Lavos will one day destroy the world. To prevent humanity's destruction, the heroes gather allies from different eras, uncover ancient secrets, and challenge fate itself. Every decision influences the journey, leading to multiple endings and making each playthrough feel unique.

Chrono Trigger combines exploration, puzzle-solving, and strategic turn-based combat using the Active Time Battle (ATB) system. Instead of random encounters, enemies appear directly on the map, allowing battles to begin seamlessly without separate battle screens. Players build a party of three characters, each with unique weapons, elemental magic, and special techniques. As characters grow stronger, they learn Dual Techs and Triple Techs, powerful combination attacks that require teamwork between party members. Exploration plays a major role, with players traveling through multiple time periods to solve puzzles, complete optional quests, and discover hidden treasures. The Nintendo DS version also includes exclusive bonus dungeons, expanded content, and quality-of-life improvements that enhance the original experience without changing its classic gameplay.
