Unlike most boxing games, Punch-Out!! places a heavy emphasis on timing and pattern recognition for success. Players have to watch opponents, dodge incoming punches, block attacks and hit at the right moment. A timely counterattack can reveal an opponent's weakness, and sometimes produce a star which can be used for a powerful uppercut. To win matches you need to get your opponents down before they get up again.
