Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles is an action-adventure video game developed by Gameloft and published by Ubisoft for the Nintendo DS. It is a prequel to the original Assassin's Creed and follows Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad on his quest through the Middle East. The game features sword fighting, stealth, climbing, platforming and exploration. Its levels lack the sprawling routes of the bigger console games, but follow more structured paths, with traps, enemies, and obstacles along the way. It also uses the Nintendo DS touch screen for special actions such as pickpocketing and information gathering from informants.

Story

The story is set in 1190 during the Third Crusade. Altaïr is then sent to find an unknown object, the Chalice, that would shift the balance of power between Holy Land factions. His travels take him to Jerusalem, Acre, Damascus and elsewhere. He encounters Templar enemies, gathers information, and faces challenges that test his combat and stealth skills as he follows the trail of the artefact. The story also provides a bit of Altaïr's back story prior to the events of the original Assassin's Creed.

Gameplay

Third-person view, 3D environments, action and platforming. Altaïr can run, jump, climb, fight enemies and use stealth to navigate through dangerous areas. You can attack lightly or heavily, block and combo in combat. As they progress, players can also utilise equipment like the Hidden Blade, throwing knives, bombs and a crossbow. Collectible orbs help to increase Altaïr's health and abilities. The touchscreen adds activities such as pickpocketing and information extraction from informants. These mechanics utilise both screens of the Nintendo DS, instead of relying on traditional combat.
